Reduce Stress When Mooring Your Houseboat – Master the Bowline Knot!
The Bowline knot is one of the most essential knots every boater should know, especially for houseboat owners on Lake Eildon.
Whether you’re a deckhand, a boat master, or managing your own houseboat, this reliable knot has saved countless lines in challenging conditions. I can’t remember the last time I boarded a vessel without using the Bowline. On one occasion, as a commercial skipper, I towed a broken-down boat in the middle of Bass Strait, in heavy seas—the line held, and the knot didn’t fail.
Learning the Bowline takes a few steps, but practice makes perfect. Start with the first loop, then the “rabbit comes out of the hole, around the tree, and back through the hole.” Once mastered, this knot is fast, secure, and reduces stress during towing, mooring, or tying up at a houseboat marina.
Eildon Houseboat Tips:
-
Always check your mooring lines for wear before docking.
-
Use strong, reliable knots like the Bowline for tying off pontoons.
-
Keep spare lines on board for emergencies.
-
Practice knot-tying regularly to make docking and towing easier.
